Direwolf Guardian Prospect - "Half-Step" has shown several factors of behavior that made him the prime choice for a service dog.  He has shown what could be labeled as empathy, as early as three days old. He has physical motions that are identical to his dad, Auggie. These slight nuances of eye movement, turning his head, even the way he "sniffs" is Auggie like - to quote an old addage - "Form follows function"

From Toodles, he gains the desire to be full bodied up against you. He appears to have the "do nothing" coping mechanism so desired in Toodles.   He waits on the skirts of commotion, watching for his part in it to open up. If there is none, he will wander off and amuse himself. Being able to entertain oneself is a BIG Service Dog choice factor.

His human-intuition is astounding.  This next part is the key to the phrase - "You will not understand until you own one."........ I will not have to speak to this pup in "training language". I will just speak english to him. In human language, I will tell him what I want, and he will do it.   He is not food or toy motivsted. The communication and involvement are his motivation. He will love to work, but not a dogs "regular" work. He has a bit of tug-love in him, but will quickly learn to tug on what is desired, and to leave undesirables alone. Last but not least, he is chosen for service work because human closeness (VELCRO) is his favorite. Some AA's I have met are hyper-velcro. They feel uncomfortable unless they are right up against you or are being touched. The lack of it will cause these hyper-Velcro AA's to almost panic if they are not touched.  This is not Half-Step. He steps back and lets me work, waiting until I am standing or sitting still to come lean against me.  He has a wonderful sense of humor, - understanding when toy play is to learn, and when it is to have fun.  He can take a joke.

1.  Drop an object into the den, away from the pups. How did this puppy react?  score 9-10

Turned his head toward object, stood up, lifted hs head and visibly smelled in the objects direction. Lost interest - found a corner of the sheet to play with and proceeded to do so while other pus investigated object

2. Using you whole hand, roughly pet the pup from muzzle to tail. score 7-8

He enjoyed it, but was ever so curious about my hand. Watched it as closely as possible, eventually moving to meet my hand for the pet. I felt he was "done" at one point, but kept going to see what would happen. He heaved a big sigh and melted into the floor, accepting what ever came next.

3. Pick up the pup from its den using your whole hand to simulate mother dogs mouth. score 7-8

Surprised him, he made a "yike" sound when lifting. For the few short seconds he was in the air, he was stiff and tail vibrating. Relaxed quickly, letting tail and back legs fall down loose.

4. Turn the pup over on its back securely supported  score 9-10

He did nothing, but search my face for my eyes. When he found them, he locked a stare , opened his mouth with a laughing pant.  This is of great interest to me, as I am looking hard for Toodles' "do nothing" response, and I beleive this may have been it.

5. Place the pup in a high-sided wicker basket by itself. How did this puppy react

when separated from its littermates?  score 7-8

Immediately sat down and looked up. Licked the sides, investigated to bottom, all from a sitting position. During the last few seconds he stood up and turned clockwise two times, then layed down and waited.

6. Place the puppy back near its siblings, but not with them.  How does this puppy react?  score 9-10

I "think" he wated to do all the tests again. He had no interest in his littermates, but thouroughly enjoyed my pant leg, and shoes. I had to physically return him to his littermates because I had to leave the area.

Direwolf Dogs of Fennario TEMPERAMENT TESTS #2 - 2.5 to 3 weeks        Collar color: Turquoise

Litter # WOTF-1                     Registration # FEN - MT2001-8                           name: Half-Step

1.  Drop an object into the den, away from the pups. How did this puppy react?  score 9-10

Almost no reaction with the exception of head turned in that direction.

2. Using you whole hand, roughly pet the pup from muzzle to tail. score 9-10

Quiet, pensive, seeming to be "learning" what the hand "is". Doesn't mind. "DID NOTHING", but it wasn't freezing

3. Pick up the pup from its den using your whole hand to simulate mother dogs mouth. score 5-6

He didn't like this one bit. Grunted loudly, tried to wiggle some, gave up after ten whole seconds. Went limp, but was still grunting.

*Noted - this score does not match the others - I may have lifted hm wrong or in such a way that scared him. He seems to have made a full recovery.

4. Turn the pup over on its back securely supported  score 7-8

Once the motions and actions of the lift-and-turn were done, he fell silent and accepting. Grunting up to that point. Turned his head in the direction of Dave's voice. Eventually relaxed fully and watched my face.

5. Place the pup in a high-sided wicker basket by itself. How did this puppy react

when separated from its littermates?  score 9-10

Sat still, looked around some, licked his front feet. Did not look up or otherwise move or make a noise.

6. Place the puppy back near its siblings, but not with them.  How does this puppy react?  score 9-10

Sat down, turned in my direction (full body), looked around then Toddered over to the now-relaxing puppy pile...found a sibling that needed a hug, and draped himself over that pup, went to sleep.
